Lost Foam Overview
In
Lost Foam casting technology, products are cast by using polystyrene or
co-polymer Foam patterns. The foam pattern is then embedded in dry unbonded
sand, which is compacted by vibration. Then molten metal is then poured
on to the foam pattern by means of a funnel runner system. Because of the
high temperatures involved the foam pattern evaporates. Once cooled the
castings are easily removed from the sand.
The
Lost Foam technology enables very complex products to be cast in one piece,
because the pattern can be built up in several sections which are then
bonded together using very sophisticated adhesives. Every cast product
a foam pattern is needed to produce a casting.
There
are advantages to the Lost Foam Process compared to conventional casting
methods.
